Hormonal changes in midlife mean that it pays to know what is the best skincare for mature skin. The products that you used and loved in your 30s may not quite cut it when it comes to the challenges of perimenopausal and menopausal skin.
Whether you call it best anti ageing skincare, or pro ageing, or just skincare that helps your general glow, it’s something we all want to know about. If I had a £1 for every time I was asked for the best anti wrinkle cream in the UK, I’d be writing this story from my yacht.
Working in the beauty industry has encouraged me to be fairly promiscuous when it comes to skincare. However, I tend to revert back to my trusted favourites, brands that I know are going to deliver what I need.
I also think it’s interesting to mix up your skincare routine. The best skincare for mature skin isn’t one fixed thing. I like to provide my skin with different actives, so that it doesn’t get too used to just one formulation.
So, here’s a list of my top go-to brands for midlife glowing skin. The best skincare for mature skin? I reckon this lot has that covered.
Caudalie Premier Cru The Eye Cream, £49
This brand was born in the Bordeaux vineyard of the famous Chateau Smith Haut Laffitte. Founders Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas learned that grape seeds contain the most powerful antioxidants in the world.
I rate all the Premier Cru range for ageing, drying, midlife skin. If I have to choose two products that I keep going back to, it’s this Eye Cream and the Premier Cru Crème Riche, £90.
Why does Caudalie make the best skincare for mature skin? This eye cream is light but also extra hydrating. It tackles all signs of ageing including fine lines, dark circles and puffiness while brightening the eye area. The Crème Rich is ultra-moisturising while firming and plumping, and tackles pigmentation. I love them both.
Murad Vita C Glycolic Brightening Serum, £72
Murad has been around for over 30 years and has earned its credibility and standing with over 19 different patents over this time. It’s a top brand when it comes to the best skincare for mature skin.
After trying its City Skin SPF 50 a few years ago, I was hooked. My recent favourites are from the new Vitamin C range, which is just brilliant for midlife skin.
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and will also help with pigmentation and sun damage. If you’re going to try just one product to start with, I highly recommend the Vita C Glycolic Brightening Serum which is excellent.
La Roche Posay Cleansing Gel, £12.50
This trusted brand is a great mid-price option and creates some of the best skincare for mature skin. Originally developed for sensitive skin, the core of each product is thermal spring water enriched with antioxidant Selenium as well as natural soothing and healing ingredients.
This cleansing gel is one of my go-tos cleansers. It is only lightly fragranced and leaves the skin feeling fabulous, with no drying effect. A great price, too.
Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3, £45
Medik8 products are my top pick for retinol and serious actives. Highly respected within the beauty industry, it is one of the most frequently namechecked brands as providing the best skincare for mature skin.
Medik8 is the brand I turn to for retinol. Retinol is essential for midlife skin as it encourages cell turnover and renewal. This has the effect of giving the skin a more glowy and plumped appearance. The key with retinol is to build up on the strength slowly, depending on your skin’s sensitivity.
Goldfaden MD Doctor’s Scrub, £65
There are two products from this brand that I’m addicted to, this one, and the Facial Detox Pore Clarifying Mask. Both give intense cleanses. The Doctor’s Scrub Ruby Crystal Microderm Exfoliator is a luxury creamy scrub which buffs away dead surface skin and impurities. It also nourishes with seaweed and Jojoba oils.
For a deeper cleanse, the Facial Detox Pore Clarifying Mask gives a fabulous intense detox, leaving skin really clean and refreshed. It’s not a cheap brand, but it is one of my favourites when I’m asked for the best skincare for mature skin.
Sarah Chapman Overnight Facial, £54
Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis range is born from her facial clinic in Chelsea, where one Meghan Markle was a regular visitor. My ‘return-to’ products are the Overnight Facial and the Intense Hydrating Booster Serum.
The Overnight Facial is a lightweight facial oil/serum (I love a facial oil) with huge benefits. Advanced peptide technology helps boost collagen production and antioxidant vitamins, combined in an omega rich oil, help to rejuvenate and brighten the skin.
The serum is great for parched skin. It has low-molecular-weight hylaronic acid (so that it can be easily absorbed) and rose water to re-plump and re-fresh. If you want the best skincare for mature skin, this is it.
